What hypnosis is
Hypnosis is a trance-like state of relaxation and focused attention that heightens an individual’s suggestibility. While hypnosis is often described as a sleep-like state, people in a hypnotic state are, in reality, in a state of hyper-awareness.
It is not to be confused with stage hypnosis or magic shows that are designed purely for entertainment. Professional hypnosis - sometimes also referred to as clinical hypnosis - is a method which is being recognised and used more commonly in hospitals* and by doctors and dentists. It simply allows direct communication with your subconscious mind.
*Amongst others, the Geneva University Hospital which, according to a recent communication from the SBVH, is training 4000 employees in hypnosis.
How it works
Hypnosis allows us to bypass your critical, logical-thinking conscious mind, and to access the powerful subconscious mind - the home to old programmes and patterns - where changes can be made. It’s perfectly safe and allows changes to happen in a much more effective way than through the conscious mind alone.
How does hypnosis Work with children?
At the most basic level, hypnosis therapy works by accessing the subconscious mind and suggesting a better or more suitable way of doing things. In the case of a problem or disorder, it guides the subconscious mind towards the desired change that will allow the child to function more healthily.
Children are much better suited to hypnotherapy as they are already highly suggestible and have vivid and active imaginations. They are not impeded by “knowing how the world works”, and therefore hypnosis can provide tremendous results very quickly for children. In fact, children are usually ready to try something new and are less likely to dismiss the process immediately than adults.
Hypnotherapists who work with children are trained in multiple techniques which may include visualization, storytelling, role-playing, and including toys in sessions.
What can HypnoKids® help with?
Just like any form of hypnosis therapy, HypnoKids® can be used as an effective treatment for a wide range of issues. Children and adolescents can see improvement in issues including nightmares, low self-esteem, stuttering, bed-wetting, and relief from fears and phobias after a single session. Other problems are usually solved within two to four sessions. The therapy is fast and fun as well as being perfectly safe.
Even conditions including learning difficulties, sleeping problems, and addiction problems can all be treated, helping children and parents together. HypnoKids® sessions can be held in-person or online and are equally effective in both contexts.
FAQ
How old must my child be to benefit from hypnosis?
I generally work with children aged 5 and upwards (except with ChiroTrance which works for all ages). If a child can focus e.g., watch a full-length film, and follow some simple instructions, then they are generally old enough to benefit from hypnotherapy.
Do you become unconscious?
No, hypnosis involves a trance-like state, but you are aware of your surroundings. You do not do anything you would consciously choose to avoid.
Is hypnosis safe?
Yes. It is simply a mental state that occurs naturally and is often compared to daydreaming or the phase between being awake and falling asleep. No drugs or medications are required and you can leave the state of hypnosis as quickly as you enter it.
Will multiple sessions be required?
A single session can bring about change, and multiple sessions are only required for the more difficult problems. The majority of issues are dealt with in 4 or fewer sessions.
